Vista: The Bad

Things I don't like about Vista, or things where I spent more time then I thought I should figuring them out.

  • Start --> Run is hidden away, the search box is not quite as good
  • Searching a  folder for a file is hard, right clicking on a folder and selecting search gives you a horrible search interface
  • The calendar moved
  • Picture preview doesn't have a display actual size button, now has a zoom slider.
  • Explorer keeps hitting 100% CPU, killing it with taskman fixes it
  • Runs the fans in my laptop, very loud fans, to much.
  • IE 7 RSS reader is not very good, why does stuff I read already, that is months old show up as new each day
  • Can not get Media Center and my Xbox 360 to talk
  • The sidebar, I like googles much better, widgets are fixed size, can make the notes panel longer, I added a second clock, One for Tokyo one for Vancouver, next reboot I have 4 clocks two for each city.
  • No clocks the next day.
  • Ctrl+Alt+Del  k doesn't lock your computer, you need to click the lock button. Windows+L does still work.
  • If you put a site in a different zone, IE will always launch it in a new window even if your current browser only has one tab open,  the site should just load in the current, single tab.
  • My Desktop blue screened on me yesterday.  First one of the harddrives vanished after a reboot the HD came back then the machine blue screened I have been in XP since making sure my backups are up todate.
  • If you have selected Remember my password when connecting to a drive share, and that password changes you can't connect to that resource again without going to the command line and using NET USE.
  • NET USE doesn't list all connections,
  • Can't seem to debug applications with VS.NET 2003
  • Zip files are very slow when they have a large number of items, unziping a file containing 6925 xml docs is taking 15 minutes (23MB zip,  51MB of unzipped files)
  • Recent items seems to only show items you have touched in the last few seconds, unlike in xp a spreadsheet I edit every day does not appear.
  • The printer that installed so easily now shows up as an unknown device, and Vista tries to install drivers on every boot.
  • Logitech is not providing beta drivers for their products. This is a strike against Logitech not Microsoft. Logitech has a habit of not supporting old hardware on new os's
  • ipconfig /release  = “The requested operation requires elevation.“ Stupid OS I am running as admin.  It wouldn't be so bad if the GUI made sense.
  • Yes I know I shouldn't run as admin, but last time I tried a non admin account, on XP, so many things broke it was not worth the trouble.
  • This whole admins are not admins is driving me insane, hate it, hate it, hate it, but it is a good thing so I leave it on.
  • Outlook web access doesn't work for sending emails in IE 7
  • Printers only work the first time you connect to them,  any reboots and you will not be able to print anymore.
  • IE isn't compatilble with Windows.
  • Program not responding dialog needs a third choice, kill it.
  • Dual monitor support is flaky,  it worked very well when I first plugged in the second screen, but now it breaks on login, reboot, or any other change.
  • Explorer randomly picking columns for detail view,  why it picks music columns for a folder of applications and text files I don't know.
